Color Dupes in Pigment

My two favorite pigment companies, TKB Trading & Coastal Scents along with The Conservatorie often sell the same colors either by name or by actual color but the price doesn't always match.  With my chart below I've sorted out the difference in price but you should always keep in mind that TKB Trading (and Coastal Scents) sells 1 ounce which is 28.35 grams while The Conservatorie sells 3.5 oz (100 grams). I hate admitting that.

Those pigments I actually own are denoted with a * because while some matches are based on my visual assessment, there are also "confirmed" matches, those where the company states that it's a match, and matches based on name alone. I also included some I did a comparison of hereSince I do not own every single pigment listed here I can't say these are all exact matches. Like with most things, use your own judgment.-MK                             Prices Updated 5/12/13

Dupes from other companies:
(This was a reader contribution- Thank You! See original comment below)
Beauty from the Earth, better known as BFTE Cosmetics, sells dupes for the beloved and discontinued Pops from TKB Trading. Links below.
Apple Green Pop! = Green Apple
Lemon Drop Pop! = Lemon
Tangerine Pop! = Tangerine
Raspberry Pop! = Raspberry
Blueberry Pop! = Blueberry
Grape Pop! = Grape
Strawberry Pop! = none available.

Also, TKB Echo is a dupe for BFTE Whisper.

The ones below are duochrome pigments. The left side are TKB's links for each but also sold as the Planetary Sampler. The right side are The Conservatorie's links for each but they can also be found under the Popular Pigments section. There is a difference in price but you should always keep in mind that regardless of price, TKB (and Coastal Scents) sells 1 ounce which is 28.35 grams while TC sells 30 grams. I hate admitting that.

Updated 1/24/12: From my recent purchase from TCP Global, I have additional dupes, listed in the middle column. Prices are based on the 1/2 oz. and it doesn’t matter if you buy them singly or as a set, it’s $14.95 per 1/2 oz. which is 14.17 grams.

These matches were based on 1) manufacturers description and 2) each company's color description.

  1. I hit the Conservatorie's Thanksgiving Sale. It was AWESOME!! I am waiting for another six months for the next one. i plan to get all of the cocktail micas as they seem to be a replacement for the discontinued Pops

I buy what I can from TKB trading because they offer free shipping. Its a huge bonus, if you are in the USA. Even if the price is a bit less elsewhere, the shipping makes up for it.

I miss the TKB forum. Formulating was what got me through the Alaska winter of darkness.

Do you make mineral makeup or just nail polish? I love makeup. I formulate in my head all the time. Also if you like to formulate, I really like DIYcosmetics, com. No free shipping. The Conservatorie has great compacts, but I can't afford to give them away so I use DIYcosmetics. I buy most of my pigment from TKB because of their free shipping and awesome sample size.

  2. TKB's forum is still there and located at:
    http://www.tkbtrading.com/content.php?content_id=18

I find that while The Conservatorie has good prices, their selection leaves a bit to be disired. I still haven't used a single pigment I bought in December.

TKB on the other hand seems to LISTEN more. What I would like, they come up with sooner or later and the selection rivals that of many stores. Chances are, if a store sells a color TKB doesn't, TKB sells the other colors to create it.

About all I've done with the pigments is make fingernail polish and acrylic paint. I get the basic concept of making mineral makeup but since I don't wear any, I don't make it. Occasionally I'll make some color recipes but the the purpose is always for nail polish.

I also have yet to purchase a sample size of pigment from anyone. I think about it when someone has a sale but the price and size just doesn't square with the value of the full size or satisfy my desire.

  3. I refuse to buy anything from TKB trading because of the way they rename their mica powders, its retarded. CS and TC tend to use the real manufacturers names so you can find more info about the pigments and find other pigments from the same manufacturer (some manufacturers are consistently higher quality than others in my experience)

Also their claim of 'duping' stuff they don't carry is dubious at best, at least when it comes to the more complex mica powders such as bolero, xian vistas, winterveld, foliage flutter, etc.. (all of those just listed are made by Kobo, inc. and are among the best and most useful mica pigments there are, in my opinion.. each is made for a particular skin type, read the literature at Kobo site to find out about their design and intended use).

Thank you for taking the time to say something here.

As far as repackaging, I don't know that TKB is any less or more guilty of it than anyone else. Yes, I agree, they have changed the names on some of their inventory but as a reseller and buying what I assume would be classified as private label micas etc, it's their choice to do so. What bothers me personally is when a company repackages and then tries to charge me more but give me less. I'm pretty aware of the various manufacturers and just as aware that, as a single consumer, they aren't going to sell to me or the amounts they would sell aren't feasible for my use- who needs 4 ounces of any one color? TKB, TC and CS have more buying power than I do.

Since I don't wear makeup, I can worry far less about the intended purpose of a pigment or glitter. Nor can I weigh in on the legitimacy of their dupes since I own only one of those you mentioned.

  5. Hello, thanks for all your hard work on this site. So much information!
I wanted to include more dupes for the TKB Pops-BFTE sells them as well. I know they are the same as I purchased both TKB and BFTE expressly for the reason of comparing them. Also, when the whole Lime Crime drama was going on BFTE publicly admitted repackaging and moved their un-reformulated, repackaged items to a page all together, apart from the unique blends they made themselves. This included the TKB Pop colors. The dupes are as follows, with TKB first and BFTE after:

Apple Green Pop! = Green Apple
    Lemon Drop Pop! = Lemon
    Tangerine Pop! = Tangerine
    Raspberry Pop! = Raspberry
    Blueberry Pop! = Blueberry
Grape Pop! = none at the time I ordered
Strawberry Pop! = none at the time I ordered.

Also, TKB Echo (echo...echo...) is a dupe for BFTE Whisper.

    HTH!

  7. So am I right in saying the general consensus for buying micas would be to go to either TKB, Conservatorium or Coastal Scents? I am just about to buy a whoooole heap of (probably sample size) micas for making my own nail polish colors and would appreciate any advice on the best place to go? Helllpppp!

    2. Righteo thanks so much! I am also after a place to buy glitter of allll different sizes/shapes/colors for maiking my own nail polish, is there such a place?

    3. You can check the Automotive & Glitter Supplier lists yourself but my personal recommendation would probably be TCP Global even though some are higher priced. What I own from them doesn't warp or bleed and all the colors are offered in various sizes and different package options like 1/2 oz, 1 oz and so on. Their flakes can go from (average) .002" up to .025". Art Glitter also sells glitters in varying sizes. Confetti.com sells chunkier glitter but I've never bought from them. Again, browse the lists to match your own preferences, they have all the info you might need.

    4. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it! I've been on the internet all day and will probably end up trying all these places. Take care.
