Glitter Hippo Color Shifting Glitters (for crafts)

It should come as no surprise that I have a massive collection of glitter, enough to fill two empty cat litter buckets (because those things are so handy for storage), one for solvent resistant, nail polish glitters and the other for the crafting variety. The Glitter Hippo glitters are the crafting type but no less fun to play around with, especially the color shifters and I have them to show you, as well as the “project” I’ve been using them for the last couple days.

Glitter Hippo’s glitters aren’t solvent resistant and Glitter Hippo doesn’t say they are- I’m putting that out there because this is a nail polish blog usually but every once in a while, I like to share crafty things too. They will bleed when exposed to polish, such as when being sprinkled onto wet polish, so they'd bleed in nail polish too- and that was ok with me since I bought the larger size for glittering Christmas ornaments last year and didn't intend to use them for polish. I like the look of the glitters so much that the ornaments stay on display year-round with my glass collection, and when I saw those glitters were being sold in a finer size, I knew I’d eventually buy them too.

Last year's ornaments prior to having the tops replaced, showing the 1/24" size color shifters.

Their place-of-display (in four shots) on top of my kitchen cabinets, bringing more color into the room.

The glitters are sold in 20 gram packages and are currently on sale, priced at $3.00 instead of the regular price of $4.00. That’s a really good deal, because true color shifting glitters are slightly harder to find (I’ve looked) and usually come in smaller package size with a higher price tag. They are mostly hex cut glitters but some colors are available in other shapes too such as stars, diamonds and butterflies- 20 grams, normally $5.00, also on sale for $3.00.

Rather than attempting to show you the color shift of each glitter with still photos, I made a short video for each set, one for the 1/24” size and one for the 1/128”, then uploaded them to my polish-related You Tube account (links for them below). Please excuse both the jerkiness of my filming and the background noise, I don’t have a lot of experience making videos, plus one of my cats wanted to use the table more than I did lol (no one eats at that table for the record).

When the new, finer sized color shifters arrived, I turned them into ornaments too (using Beacon Glitter It!), then looked around for something else to use the glitters on. After rejecting various ideas, I ended up grabbing the oval glass cabochons and the clear acrylic adhesive ones I bought for my not-quite-successful nail polish pendants years ago and tried glittering the backs using clear nail polish as the adhesive. I made many before I realized the exposure to the wet polish was causing the color to bleed from the edges of the glitter and while the effect wasn’t awful, it was ruining some of the color shifting. Below is Maleficent on the back of a glass cab, where the contrast between the dark purple of the glitter and the now green edge bleed is most obvious.

I tried Mod Podge Gloss next, using it in the same way as the clear nail polish. I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge, sprinkled some glitter on and pressed it down, until the back was fully covered. Let dry and repeat… typically took three or four layers until opaque from the front. The MP goes on white but dries clear and even though it will dull the shine of glitter a little, the glass helps offset that.

On the left is the clear polished cab (with edge bleed), the right is the Mod Podge'd cab

While the cabs were flipped face down and drying, I realized the back looked a bit like a simulated druzy quartz (Google it if you don’t know what I am talking about) and I kind of like that effect too.

I moved on to glittering those decorative clear glass (flat-backed) rocks the Dollar Tree sells and wanted to add a couple things about using the Mod Podge to do this.
- It doesn't matter a lot what paint brush you use for the first coat but for any successive coats, I'd advise a softer brush with a slightly thicker layer of the Mod Podge. A firmer paint brush will remove some glitter while you're applying the MP which you don't want, and the thicker application helps with drag.
- Press down lightly on the glitter immediately after sprinkling it on and leave it alone to dry completely, then knock off the excess glitter. You'll have better coverage that way.
- After you've put as many layers on as you want, seal the back with a final layer of Mod Podge to keep the glitter from falling off.
- One final note on using Mod Podge on glass. Glass isn't porous and the adhesive bond is not permanent so if you're rough with them or you pick at the glitter purposely, it will come off. I colored wine glasses using Mod Podge+food coloring for decoration and a couple years later was still able to peel it off the glasses. I used it on my front door the same way to simulate stained glass and know when I get tired of looking at it, removing it won't be a problem.

I have no idea what I'll use these for, maybe like large, smooth rhinestones or maybe I'll just throw them in a bowl as decorative pretties.

Go check out Glitter Hippo's glitters if you haven't already. They sell much more than color shifting glitters, all affordably priced- see categories below. -MK

Bling MetalFlake: Store Review

Links checked, prices updated 12/12/13

It must’ve been an oversight that I reviewed the flakes I bought from Bling Metalflake in September ’11 but not the store itself so I’m here to fix that.

Bling Metalflake was the first automotive-related store I purchased from although that decision was greatly influenced by how sparkly the pictures looked in the eBay store. I was aware that it was basically glitter but there were quite a few holographics and sizes larger than .004” which was all I owned at the time. I also believed, erroneously, that because it was automotive grade polyester, it probably wouldn’t bleed when submerged in polish. The eBay store is under the name of AirGraffix but sets are only in the online store Bling Metalflake. Prices are reasonable, PayPal is accepted and as a bonus, they ship via USPS which helps keep my expenses down.

After doing the math, I decided to order 2 sets of 6 2 ounce jars for $49.99 but the ordering process was made slightly more difficult by the fact that the site doesn’t display correctly- text and images overlap. The way you are supposed to order is to enter the number of the color in the appropriate box and click the PayPal Add to Cart button for each, or, for a set, a series of numbers in a different box. I got around this by copying the entire page to a MS Office document which forced it into a sensible order, shown below (and that isn’t my spelling).

Having decided on the two sets, I selected all the available holographics and three color shifting flakes (based on name and appearance) which you can view in my other entries regarding the company. I spent $109.00 so shipping was free.

Almost all the flakes bled but the ones I had real issues with were #16 Pink Shifting Prism, #32 Orange/Lime Shifting, #40 Blue/Purple Shifting, #54 Diamond Ice Prism which became flecks within minutes. When I emailed the company to complain (politely because you don’t bitch when you want something out of someone), I was told that it has known bleeding issues and my money would be refunded. It took some emailing back and forth but eventually the owner agreed to exchange all four, was willing to help me if I had questions since he was a custom painter and in the end, I felt that I had been dealt with fairly. When I received my exchange order, he had even thrown in an extra full size holo that is not for sale.

Tickled to death and working on pictures for my second Bling Metalflake entry I realized the order was only semi-correct- he had sent the proper replacement colors but the hex sizes were wrong… I let it go, it wasn’t worth my trouble to point out the error.

A month later, I would email the owner again because he was a custom painter and I thought he might have some insight into the matter of the Nfu Oh-like flakes but he didn’t respond. I let that one go, too.

Would I buy from Bling Metalflake again? Probably not. I like the other colors, but I can find non bleeders elsewhere along with better customer service. -MK

Nfu Oh Flakes, Updated

Links checked 12/12/13

10-10-11
I got a lot of feedback from you all regarding what those duochrome flakes were in Nubar and Nfu Oh polishes (and a few other brands) but Nubar and Nfu Oh themselves so far have declined to answer. The other glitter companies I emailed about their own products weren't able to tell me if they were colorfast, let alone duochrome, so I won't be wasting money on a big order.

Without a definitive answer, the possibilities include mica, both synthetic and natural, mica flakes coated with titanium dioxide, mylar and polyester/PET (cosmetic & craft glitter).

I decided to try some of the Nfu Oh flakes (Opal Glitter) made for nail art on the off chance they may be the same type of flake that Nfu Oh actually puts in their polish.  I have no idea if they are "multichromatic" nor if they are colorfast once submerged in polish. I bought them from Fabulous Street but they don't list the ingredients and they aren't listed anywhere else. I purchased two flakes from the "Rainbow Series", Opal Glitter White and Opal Glitter Dark Green for $3.50 each.

Although tracking says delivery will be tomorrow, I'd say there's a good chance they will come today. I mentioned this purchase only briefly in my entry I Have a Project for You so if you don't know what I'm talking about, don't feel like you missed something. As soon as they get here, I intend to test them out so hopefully when I update this entry, I will have positive news, swatches to share and not another entry on my Bleeding Glitter List.

10-11-11
Eh, I didn't realize it was Columbus Day yesterday so the Nfu Oh flakes arrived today, not yesterday as predicted. The results of the bleed test I will save for the end but here are some preliminary pictures.

Indoors Sunlight.

Lamp light.

Opal Glitter Dark Green shown next to a quarter for size.

Lamp light but slightly blurry I know, sorry.

Also under lamp light.

Each container is densely packed full so there's plenty of flake to play around with although it does not have a weight listed. Individual flake size is mixed but small enough to fit easily in any bottle. The flake material itself feels stiff, stiffer than what I expected and I doubt they would lay flat against the nail if the flakes were bigger. Both are iridescent and the Dark Green looks like it might even be a duochrome. As many of you said, they look promising.

showing loose flakes

The bad news is that Opal Glitter Dark Green failed the bleed test within 45 minutes and because it bleeds, I am not going to bother testing Opal Glitter White

Here are the flakes right after I put them in the bottle at 11:14a.
Somewhat transparent but brightly colored, as it should be.

(10/11/11) By 11:54a, what I had was this:

10/12/11, 9:43a

My conclusion? Like all the other bleeders, these flakes are fine if you're the patient type willing to place them on your nails by hand but they aren't going to withstand submersion in nail polish. This was very disappointing but pretty much what I expected to happen. Nfu Oh makes flakes for polish and polish with flakes in it- the two aren't the same, clearly, no pun intended. Another entry for the bleeder list. -MK

Bleeding Glitter List

Note 5/08/17: This was a perfectly valid and helpful entry but with the selection of solvent resistant glitters that are available now- and how many of those listed here that aren't anymore, I'm not sure it's relevant. I've removed all the links since they were dead.

I own a lot of glitter, no question aboout it, some good, some not and I keep track of everything. This is my master list of glitters and what they do when submerged in polish, whom I bought them from and what grade they are. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Hobby Lobby, in addition to arts and crafts supplies they sell home decor, household goods etc. If nothing is listed under "Other Info", the glitter behaves. Information will be added as it is learnt. All of these glitters have been featured somewhere on this blog, use the "glitter" or "bleeding glitter" label. -MK
