Color Recipes 3

Links checked 12/12/13
I didn't mean to post this entry but what the heck, I'll go with it.

Since these recipes were made before TKB Trading's Pops! pigments were discontinued please see my entry Alternatives to TKB's discontinued Pops.

More color recipes made from both TKB Trading and Coastal Scents pigments in addition to some eyeshadow sets, L.A. Colors Tease Collection and Almay Trio for Greens. I’ve purchased the 5 spoon set TKB Trading sells for this purpose. I won’t claim that these recipes I made are “outstanding” but they are definitely different.

When it comes to cooking I never follow a recipe to the letter and I feel the same about color recipes. Feel free to tweak the recipe to suit yourself.

In each picture is the recipe from above, small finger sample ala TKB Trading and a swatch in polish below that. I'm aware I need better pictures.

Franken: #224 Blackstar Turquoise

Links checked 12/12/13

I wanted to show you another franken polish but didn't want to remove my current polish so I'm using my model for this post. This is both a franken and a color recipe comprised mainly of Coastal Scents pigments.

In the Blackstar line of pigments there is a blue, green, red and gold but no purple or aqua color which I thought was a shame so I decided to try my hand at making them. The final result turned out like I wanted but is somewhat diminished in polish.

The supplies used were: CS Summit Turquoise, TKB Black mica, CS Ocean Blue and CS Emerald glitter (using TKB Trading's mini spoon set) for the color recipe. For the franken I also used the requisite BBs, clear polish, Sally Hansen Black Out (XtremeWear) and CS Crystal Ice mica.

The recipe is ®SS Blackstar Turquoise
3 tad (TKB) Black mica
2 tad (CS) Summit Turquoise (like Hilite pigments)
2 smidgen (CS) Ocean Blue Glitter
1 smidgen (CS) Emerald Glitter

Blackstar Turquoise shown below as dry swatches in natural daylight. The swatches on the left were taken outdoors in direct sunlight.

The polish is: an unspecified amount of ®SS, ½ clear, ¼ SH Black Out, and a small amount of Crystal Ice mica for sparkle. Is there such a thing as "too much" pigment? Sure, but I add it until its opaque enough to suit me and settling be damned. I can't paint well on fake hands either.

Outdoors, no sun.

                                            Outdoors, direct sunlight.

                                        Indoors, daylight but no sun.

Color Recipe Flubs

Links checked 12/12/13

I spent my day yesterday messing around with my pigments trying to create something new in addition to trying to tweek The Conservatorie's Shamrock. After several hours and two flubs I decided I'm not much good at it. I often forget to factor in that the color is going to darken when it's added to polish and some interference pigments will be diminished; what looks great "dry" is less remarkable in polish.

So after Shamrock ended up looking like a cross between Coastal Scents' Duocrome Iridescent Green Gold Mica and Gemtone Topaz Mica (I could've sworn that was Gemstone) and my 30 gram container was too full to continue, I started wondering what does everyone else do when their color recipe fails? Do you set it aside, hopefully to go back later and fix it? Do you give it away to someone else or forget about it altogether? Would anyone else even want something like that?

What do you do? Fill me, let me know. Got suggestions, ideas? You can tell me that too. In the meantime I'm going to pack my flubs away along with the frustration before my white walls go green and not in the environmental way. -MK

Color Recipes 1

Links checked 12/12/13. The original date of this post is 2010 so all of these pigments are not available for purchase.

Since these recipes were made before TKB Trading's Pops! pigments were discontinued please see my entry Alternatives to TKB's discontinued Pops.

As promised what I have for you today are a few color recipes I whipped up from both TKB Trading and Coastal Scents pigments. I mentioned in another entry that TKB has an extensive collection of color recipes on their website and I’ve made some of these as well, purchased the 5 spoon set TKB Trading sells for this purpose. I won’t claim that these recipes I made are “outstanding” but they are definitely different. In the case of “In the Mood” and “Red Violet” I didn’t apparently keep track of the exact amounts used but at least put them in order of least to greatest.
When it comes to cooking I never follow a recipe to the letter and I feel the same about color recipes. Feel free to tweak the recipe to suit yourself.
In each picture is the recipe from above, small finger sample ala TKB Trading and a swatch in polish below that.

Update 10/22/10: I am still not pleased with what was supposed to be a polish swatch on these pictures so I'm adding a pic of my index card swatches. The color turned out a little better.
