Most everyone has heard of China Glaze’s Wagon Trail, a black based polish with deep gold shimmer (I don’t own it, I don’t usually buy what I can dupe). Well, this franken polish, #360 Volcanic, was based on that idea but orange. The supplies nor the recipe are elaborate but I’m satisfied with how it turned out.

In addition to those above I used clear polish, about a 1/2 bottle. I didn’t measure the Reflecks or glitter like usual, just dropped it in until I liked the appearance.
The following photos were taken outside this past summer a couple days after the paint job but its good enough you get the idea.
It doesn’t look like much in the bottle…

but in the sun it sparkles!

As I said, I personally am happy with how it turned out. One of the reasons I like the Reflecks collection is because they sparkle like glitter but the smaller particle size allows it to apply smoother than ordinary glitter. -MK

ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if frankening is really worth the cost of all the materisls one has to gather together,maybe it'd be around the same price to just buy the polish,however,I admire you're creativity. On a side note I was discouraged yesterday by the cost of Martha Stewart glitters at Michaels.

ReplyDeleteThalie- when I started doing this a couple years ago and like you, I was considering the price of all those supplies, my dad asked me, "What are you going to enjoy more, buying polish and mixing it or buying pigments and glitter and making your own?" For me the answer was obvious. There's no hobby that doesn't require money being put into it to keep going and look at it this way- whether it be art supplies, polish supplies, jewelry supplies, whatever it is, buying it now is cheaper than if you buy it two years from now.
Martha Stewart is a brand name, thats it. The tinsel glitters bled, I have no reason to believe they used a different dye on the others.
eBay can be your friend for bargains on all supplies. Its a sad fact that many people are broke and need money and not everyone bids aggressively. I'm not saying take advantage of people of course but there's nothing wrong with being in the right place at the right time.
